DETAILS
It is our pleasure to present the Japan premiere of The Humans, a hit play by renowned playwright and scriptwriter Stephen Karam. Set in a run-down Manhattan apartment, this story takes place over one night of family chats at a Thanksgiving gathering--worries over poverty, ageing, illness and lost love, and disputes over religion. The world of this story depicting the greatest anxieties of human life serves as a microcosm of today's America, also sharing much with today in Japan.
This play was premiered in Chicago by the American Theater Company in 2014, performed at the Off-Broadway in New York by the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2015, and became Stephen Karam's Broadway debut work in 2016. It was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in the Drama Division, and received a Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play and an Off-Broadway Theater (OBIE) Award for Playwriting. Then in 2021, the play was made into a film by A24 with Stephen Karam himself serving as director. Featuring performances by Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein and Steven Yeun, it earned high praise. We are pleased to welcome back director Kuwabara Yuko who memorably directed Lobby Hero with the NNTT in 2022.
