English surtitles introduced for the opera "Asters"
We are introducing English surtitles for ALL performances of the Japanese new opera "Asters".
"Japanese opera from a Japanese opera house". While this has been a core objective of the New National Theatre, Tokyo since it opened, this is the first work commissioned by the New National Theatre, Tokyo in six years.
In the novel "Asters", ISHIKAWA Jun depicts the fate and struggles of a Heian period artist in a fantasy world that extends into the underworld. A Japanese composer, NISHIMURA took on the challenge of his first major opera together with long-time collaborator librettist SASAKI Mikiro.
The world premiere of this new opera will be directed by OIDA Yoshi who has worked with Peter BROOK on a number of occasions as a performer, and a glowing track record, too, as an opera director in Europe.
English surtitles will also be introduced for two performances (13 Oct. (Sat.) 14:00, 14 Oct. (Sun.) 14:00) for MOZART's masterpiece "The Magic Flute".
