"Die Fledermaus" Special Event: 'Discover SAKE of Japan'
The New National Theatre Tokyo, one of Japan's most prestigious opera houses, will host a tasteful and uniquely Japanese event which brings together opera with Japanese sake. It will feature a performance of Die Fledermaus, which is widely considered the greatest work of Johann Strauss II who is known for his mastery of the waltz genre.
As well as watching this operetta, audience members will be able to enjoy the lovely flavours of sake. Following the performance, guests can also take part in a special backstage tour arranged exclusively for this event.
Before the performance, guests will have an opportunity to sample the sparkling sake 'AWA SAKE', which uses the same production method as champagne to achieve a fine, bubbly foam reminiscent of the operetta's overture. It's the perfect pairing for the night's sophisticated and revelrous mood. AWA SAKE is a premium sparkling sake which has been selected and officially certified by the Japan Awasake Association.
During the intermission, guests can enjoy sake-based cocktails, a novel genre of cocktail which is still rare but garnering increasing popularity both domestically and abroad. These drinks effectively express the potential and true charms of sake. A sake expert will offer various explanations related to sake, and food pairings for the sake as well as sweets made with Japanese ingredients will be provided.
All services will be provided in both English and Japanese so that participants from Japan as well as other countries can enjoy the event to the fullest.
This event presents a valuable opportunity to experience, in refreshingly multicultural fashion, an operatic performance at the New National Theatre Tokyo, whose performances have been praised by the most reputable global media outlets of the West, along with sake rooted in the culture and customs of Japan. Come down for yourself and enjoy the unusual combination of sake tasting and Die Fledermaus, a staple of December and the winter season.

Services | 1. Pre-performance time (from 13:00): 'Kampai with Japanese Sake!' Part One: AWA SAKE experience (approx. 45 min.) Guests can sample AWA SAKE, a sparkling sake whose popularity is growing on a global scale. This sparkling-type sake is made using high-quality rice grown in Japan as the base ingredient along with carefully cultivated koji (malted rice) and water of unrivalled quality. The elegant and fine-textured foam is naturally formed by the yeast during the fermentation process, and each batch of sake is made using the same in-bottle secondary fermentation technique as seen with champagne in order to achieve a delightful, silky-smooth foam texture, complemented by a full-bodied taste and complex, overlapping flavour nuances. AWA SAKE is a sparkling sake officially certified by the Japan Awasake Association, a third-party inspection and certification organisation which approves only beverages that meet stringent quality standards. CEO Alexander Phillip of SAKETIME, a website serving as Japan's largest-scale online provider of sake information, will explain the charms and appeal of AWA SAKE and recommend ways for people to get the best possible enjoyment out of their 'sake life'. 2. Act I of Die Fledermaus (approx. 50 min.) 3. During the intermission: 'Kampai with Japanese Sake!' Part Two: Sake Cocktails experience (approx. 30 min.) Guests will be treated to colourful, visually appealing sake-based cocktails which look great on social media feeds. This genre of cocktail has been garnering a devoted fan base thanks to the outstanding balance it achieves between sweetness and tartness (a vital factor in cocktail creation) complemented by the unique characteristics of Japanese sake, all of which result in rich and deep-reaching flavour characteristics. The cocktails prepared at this event have relatively low alcohol content, making them a welcome option even for light drinkers. 4. Acts II and III of Die Fledermaus (approx. 100 min.) 5. Special post-performance backstage tour to end the event (approx. 60 min.) This special backstage tour is only available to guests of this particular event. It provides a look at the stage set and equipment, theatre facilities, and more, taking participants into areas which are normally off-limits to the public. (Please note that excessively inebriated guests will not be permitted to take the tour.) |
